Course descriptions for the Juris Doctor (JD) and Executive Juris Doctor (EJD) degrees are below. Students are expected to complete 108 semester credits for the JD program, which will prepare them to be well-rounded and qualified for their legal careers. While the Executive Juris Doctor program requires 90 semester credits for completion. The EJD is a doctoral degree and it is designed for non-practicing legal professionals who would like to know the law but not practice as lawyers. Students of the EJD program can study selected courses from the School of Business if they desire to do so.
LAW 6000 Introduction to Law, Legal Research and Writing – 4
The course introduces students to the basic aspects of the American legal system, writing, reading and the synthesis of legal reading as well as the interpretation of the law. It covers the basic process of how laws are made by the courts, precedent and the development of the law from the common law of England to the American legal system. It introduces to students to legal research and writing.
LAW 6005 Contracts -6
This study covers the law governing contracts formation, consideration between two or more parties, third party beneficiaries, Status of fraud, performance, liability of breach of contract and assignment of rights.
LAW 6010 Criminal Law – 6
The course of Criminal Law discusses the various elements of crimes. Upon completing this course students are expected to understand the fundamental principles of criminal law. For example: Criminal liability; strict liability offenses; affirmative defenses: justification, ignorance, legal insanity and self-defense. The English common law concept of criminal law and Statutory codes will also be covered. The case method is used to understand this course.
LAW 6015 Torts – 6
The course analyzes civil liability out of the range of contract, strict liability, vicarious liability negligence, intentional and unintentional liability, defamation, product liability, wrongful invasion of privacy, and other torts.
LAW 6020 Civil Procedure – 6
This course focuses on the methods and process of implementing a lawsuit in state or federal courts. Topics include pleading, motion practice, discovery, jury trials, jurisdiction, and venue.
LAW 6025 Criminal procedure – 6
This course discusses the constitutional analyses of police conduct, arrest, search and seizure, confession, right to counsel, right to a jury trial, and self-incrimination, burden of proof, government obligation to disclosure and Habeas Corpus.
LAW 6001 Legal Research and Writing -1
The course focuses on strategies used in locating legal materials from law library, books and online research. It introduces students to the idea of legal research, courts systems, legal opinions, precedents and statutes, basic guidelines for legal writing, writing of memoranda, citation and understanding brief.
LAW 6030 Real Property – 6
This course involves the study of the law that governs real estate and the sale of personal property. Focus is placed on issues surrounding the ownership of land and chattel, future interest, easement and covenants, tenancy in common, joint tenancy, tenancy by entirety and the landlord and tenant relationship.
LAW 6035 Constitutional Law – 6
The scope of the federal powers, separation of powers, the federal powers, the federal systems, due process, the First Amendment and equal protection are analyzed in this course. The general aspects of the federal constitution as they relate to criminal investigation, statute of limitation, intergovernmental immunities, freedom of religion, and freedom of association/ speech/ press are also discussed.
LAW 6040 Evidence -6
This course discusses the rulings on admissibility and rejection of materials in a case. It analyzes the rule concerning elevancy, testimony, expert witnesses, documents, impeachment, judicial notice, privileges and burden of proof.
LAW 6045 Professional Responsibility/Ethics – 6
This course focuses on the professional duties and ethical responsibilities that apply to the legal profession and its members. Judicial code of conduct and the American Bar Association code of conduct of its members are discussed. Topics covered include advertising, solicitation, fees, conflict of interest and personal responsibilities of those in the legal profession.
LAW 6050 Business Association – 6
A study of the law as it relates to the rights and liabilities of partners involved with agency relationship. It analyzes what is involved with the creation of an agency, contractual rights between owners and third parties, authority of the parties, formation of partners, relationship of partners, the termination and dissolution of an agency relationship.
LAW 6055 Wills and Trust – 6
This course analyzes the law regarding the administration and planning of estates. It introduces the student to the process of understanding and preparation of a will. It involves the study of testate, intestate, succession, family protection, alteration, revocation and testamentary capacity. The second phase of the course Trust, focuses on the creation and modification of a private trust, as well as a charitable trust. It analyzes the administration of a trust, responsibilities of a trustee, power, duties, liabilities, asset management, contract regarding wills, constructive trust and the termination of a trust.

LAW 6060 Conflicts of Law – 4
This course provides an overview of the legal issues involving multi-states. It covers the conflict of law as well as the choice of law, jurisdiction, recognition and enforcement of law and constitutional limitation.
LAW 6065 Remedies – 4
This course discusses the legal and equitable remedies afforded to individuals or business entities in civil courts due to injury committed by another. Specifics topics would include replevin, ejectment and specific performance, personal injury and death, mistakes, restitution and injuries to business.
LAW 6070 Trial Preparation and Appellate Advocacy – 4
This course provides guidelines and practical direction of civil and criminal trials. It teaches the student the how and dos of the litigation process. Topics covered include trial preparation, written motion, opening, cross examination, witness impeachment, case theory, and closing arguments. The focus of the course is on exercises that guide the students through the process.
LAW 7075 Alternative Dispute Resolution – 4
The study of this course provides an overview of the techniques used in conflict resolution. The students will learn various mediation, negotiation and arbitration techniques that are used to resolve conflict. The materials provide practical guidelines of the ADR process.
LAW 6080 Legal Internship – 4
Students have the option of an internship placement at a local law office which specializes in the students’ desire area of practice. Students will work with the career placement center and their professors for such an assignment. Require professors’ approval.
LAW 6085 Family Law – 4
The course analyzes the law and regulations regarding family. Topics include marriage, annulment, divorce, child custody and visitation, child support, spousal support, prenuptial, ethics and other family related issues.
LAW 6090 Corporations – 4
This course provides an analysis of the rules and regulations involves in forming a business corporation, financing, operation, corporate powers, governance, conflict of interest as well as dissolution of a corporate entity. It discusses the duties of the directors, interest of shareholders, fraud and fiduciary duties of the directors. The general focus is on the law governing the corporate practice of conducting in a corporation, partnership and limited liability entities.
LAW 6095 Intellectual Property – 4
This course covers all aspects of intellectual property (IP) legal issues. Topics include patents, copyright, trademark and trade cases. The area of intellectual property is also related to invention, technology or the IT industry or simply the creation ideas.
LAW 7005 Administrative Law – 4
This course considers the rules that govern the formation and purposes of the administrative body of the federal and state agencies. It analyzes government powers, the rules, purpose and functions of government agencies, boards and commissions that are put in place due to legislative power and how to function before such agencies.
LAW 7010 International Law – 4
The course covers the law that governs action of nations. It deals with the international legal system, world courts, international criminal courts, treaties, international organizations, jurisdiction of states, nationality and territory, protection of the sea and environment, as well as the relation of nations on economic issues.
LAW 7010 Security Law – 4
This course covers security regulation in the United States and how the SEC helped shape the U.S. Security Law. It provides an overview of the security market. Topics such as Treading Transactions, Investment Contracts, What is a security and When an investment may be not a security, Insider Trading, etc.
LAW 7015 Bankruptcy
The course introduces student to the laws governing bankruptcy in states and federal courts. It provides an overview of the bankruptcy process and it discusses the various classes of bankruptcy, debtor and creditor issues, as well as liquidation and reorganization.
LAW 7020 Labor Law
This course provides a complete overview of Labor Law. It discusses the ever changing issues of the field. It covers unionization and representation as well as government regulations that govern employee protection. Topics include work place dual capacity, product liability: medical inquiries and examination, right of part-time workers, affirmative action, and discrimination based on religion/ age, minimum wage and child labor, Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA), health care reform, the Employment Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA), etc.
LAW 7025 Legal Practice Management/Professional Skills – 2
This course discusses the various techniques used in analyzing a lawsuit. It covers discovery, motion, drafting of respond, legal analysis, legal writing, organization, ethics and professional responsibility to clients.
LAW 7030 Immigration Law -4
This course discusses the law that governs the US Immigration system. It covers various immigration issues that include visa, asylum, detention and deportation, status adjustment, citizenship, naturalization, and employment authorization.
LAW 7035 Environmental Law -4
The course surveys the regulations and federal law governing environmental issues. It examines the legal issues and business problems associated with environmental law, environmental protection, water and waste and other hazardous waste that are regulated by federal law, as well as public policies.
LAW 7040 Patent Law – 4
The course provides an overview of the United States Patent Laws, the regulations governing Patent registration and the organization that oversees them. The topics include the process of filing for a patent, interpreting claims and patent infringement.
LAW 7045 Worker’s Compensation law- 4
The course considers the worker’s compensation law and legalistic policy governing employees’ accident or health issues related to employment, disability, and third party lawsuits. The course provides an analysis and overview of the worker’s compensation process and law.
Executive Juris Doctorate (EJD) ( Degree )
Executive Juris Doctorate program requires 72 credits. The EJD is a doctoral degree; it is designed for non-practicing professionals who would like to know the law but not practice as lawyers. The purpose of the program is to help students develop legal mind and to possess solid business expertise. After the completion of the program students would be prepared to navigate the legal world as well as the business community. Students of the EJD program study selected courses from the School of Business and Barclay School of Law. It is a Doctoral program.
